历山是中条山脉的一段，位于山西南部地区翼城、垣曲、阳城、沁水4县的交界处，最高峰舜王坪，海拔2358米。相传舜王当年耕治此山时，曾编制了黄河流域的物候历——《七十二候》，故后人称此山为历山。境内峰峦叠翠，高距云表，是山西省南部最高的山，保存着华北地区仅有的一片原始森林。这里自然风光、原始森林和古人类文化融为一体，集旅游、探险、狩猎、考古、写生、度假为一体的综合性风景区；是一个大气、土壤、水源、环境质量品位极高的、无污染的自然风景区。
